Create Professional RSS Feeds

More and more companies are using RSS as a means to communicate, so having an RSS feed that is professional and well polished will help differentiate your company from your competition. What makes an RSS feed professional? Follow these simple steps to polish your RSS feed and take it to the next level...

1. Feed Image

Add an image to your RSS feed. The image will be displayed by many feed readers each time your feed is displayed. This will help build and reinforce your brand or image in the minds of people who read your RSS feed. Adding an image to an RSS feed is relatively easy, and adds a level of professionalism.

2. Images And Links

Add images and links within the RSS feed. The process of adding images and links to the description field of an RSS feed is really quite simple if you are using software to manage your feed, while it may be somewhat complex if you are hand-coding your feed. Incorporating images or hot links in the feed's content will allow your readers to explore further and dig deeper into your content. The added benefit, of course, are the additional web links back to your site from any sites that choose to syndicate or display your feed's contents.

3. Validate

Properly formed code is important, in order to ensure that all RSS readers can read and display your feed. But it is also very important for another reason... nothing is more embarrassing or unprofessional than an RSS feed that is broken or stops working. Use software to manage your feed creation, and validate your feed on a regular basis.

4. Easy To Subscribe

Make your RSS feed easy to subscribe to. Include the traditional RSS icon, or an indicator site-wide, so that website visitors can easily locate and subscribe to your RSS feeds. Include basic directions on how website visitors should subscribe to your RSS feed.

5. Auto Discovery

Add "auto-discovery" code to the HTML header of your website. Many RSS aggregators include an auto-discovery feature, which allows them to automatically detect when a website offers an RSS feed. So, if your website visitors are using one of those aggregators, they will instantly know that an RSS feed for your content is available from your website.

6. Favicon

Add a "favicon" to your website. Favicons (short for "favorite icons") are typically a tiny version of a company or Web site's logo, and appear in the URL bar of the user's web browser. When a user bookmarks a specific Web page that includes a favicon, that Web page loads the customized icon into the user's browser. Because the favicon is usually displayed next to the web site address, it can act like a small logo or an icon that visitors can use to remember the web site or the site address. Feed directories and RSS Search Engines will often use a favicon beside an RSS feed's listings. So be sure that you have one on your website; otherwise, you'll have nothing but a generic icon beside your feed. Webmasters can establish branding by creating a favicon for their website. Here is a free service from HTMLKit: http://www.html-kit.com/favicon

7. Subscribe To Your Own Feed

Always subscribe to your RSS feed, so you can see what your website visitors are seeing.

While it is not essential to incorporate the above elements in your RSS feed, the additions will result in a more professional and polished RSS feed that stands apart from competitors in news aggregators and RSS directories. Spending a few extra minutes here could easily draw more attention to your feed.

Social Search Engine: Houston entrepreneurs seek a sharper search engine. They say their system of letting users rank sites is superior.

07/20/07 - by Brad Hem - [web] -

Four Houston entrepreneurs are launching a search engine today that they hope will challenge the likes of Google and Yahoo.

Frustrated with the results they get from other search engines, Neal Verma, founder and CEO of iRazoo.com, and three friends with technology backgrounds have spent their evenings and weekends - and an undisclosed amount of money - over the last eight months developing iRazoo.

Now they'll have to prove it works by drawing enough users, who in turn will attract advertisers to fund the company in a business where a handful of companies dominate.

They're betting they have a better approach to search - a site designed to highlight the most useful sites by seeking input from users who can earn rewards by voting for, or against, Web sites.

Even though 97 percent of Internet searches are done on Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask and Time Warner, according to comScore, there are hundreds of smaller search engines.

Newcomers keep trying because there is a lot of money to be made, said James Lamberti, senior vice president for comScore, which measures Web usage and ranks search engines by use.

In the U.S. alone, companies are spending $17 billion a year in online advertising, and 40 percent of that is spent on search engine sites, he said.

"There's still a ton of activity in this field," he said. "A lot of people think they can build a better mousetrap."

But it's very difficult to catch on. Hundreds of companies like iRazoo have started search engines. Not since Google emerged five years ago has a search engine really gotten traction, Lamberti said.

Those dominant search engines are always in a buying mood as they try to find niches that will catch on with users, he said.

In the technology world where paradigms can change faster than Google can find 63.5 million hits for "monkey," Verma pointed to that top competitor as evidence iRazoo can succeed.

Google may dominate now, but it, too, had humble beginnings, he said.

Last year, google - with a small "g" - knew it had arrived when it became an official dictionary entry. Members of the iRazoo team can dream of the day when their search engine makes the dictionary, but they could live with one of their targets taking notice and paying them a few million bucks for iRazoo.com.

"Either way is fine with us," Verma said.

For now they need to prove their site's features will appeal to users and return better search results.

• Users can recommend sites that come up in their searches. If a link had useful information, a user can vote to recommend it to others. If not, the user can vote against it. Sites that get good recommendations will show up at the top of future searches. Sites that get more "no" votes than "yes" votes eventually will be dropped.

• Users earn points every time they vote. When they earn enough points, they can redeem points for digital cameras, iPods and other gadgets. Each recommendation earns 2 points, and an iPod Shuffle costs 58,000 points.

• When users search for a term, iRazoo puts a thumbnail screen shot of the site next to the search result, allowing users to preview the page before linking to it.

Only once
To prevent users from manipulating the system - sometimes known as "Google-bombing" as in the recent example that got Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert listed as the top result when searching for "greatest living American" - iRazoo requires users to log in, and they can only recommend a particular site once, Verma said.

The iRazoo site also tracks users by the unique address on their computers, and one user can only vote for a site once per computer, Verma said.

"You'd have to have a lot of time on your hands to get around it," he said.

Doubts if it's enough
If there's anything the Internet has shown, it's that a lot of people have too much time on their hands. Todd Mintz, a Portland, Ore.-based Internet consultant, suspects iRazoo's checks and balances won't be enough to prevent efforts to move sites into the top spots mostly likely to be seen by users.

"There are very smart people out there who will figure out how to game it," he said.

Depending on recommendations can be risky because the site can't account for how smart users are, said Scott Hendison, another Portland Internet consultant specializing in search engine marketing and optimization - the practice of getting one group's site to come up higher in search results than another.

Moving up the list
Search engines rely on algorithms - mathematical formulas - to find the best search results. Basically, the engine looks for keywords on sites across the Web.

As Internet marketing has evolved, people such as Hendison have figured out ways to get their clients' sites listed higher in search results on popular search engines, in turn driving traffic to their sites.

"Commercialization has kind of taken over the algorithm a little bit," Lamberti said.

Mintz said the algorithms' recommendations are better than those of strangers.

"The Google or Yahoo algorithm may not be perfect, but I'd trust them more than someone I don't know," he said.

SEO HELP Target market

Size Does Matter Don't Let Your Spouse Say Otherwise

By: Gary Huynh - [web]

Size Does Matter - Don't Let Your Spouse Say Otherwise

The general convention is the bigger the better.

When picking a market to target online though, the smaller market is the most profitable way to go.

Smaller markets, often called niche markets are an overlooked source of gold. There is a very small supply of information products that target niche markets. As a result, the demand is very high.

Look at it this way - just by changing your target market you can work less and earn more. Isn't that what you want?

The internet marketing industry is a very competitive market - there's no argument against that. So if you want to succeed with this target market, you'll need a killer sales letter, awesome graphics, powerful offers. In effect, you need to work really hard and be different just to get a decent conversion from visitors to customers.

Now turn your focus to niche markets such as left handed guitar players. Since you have less competition, you do not need to put forth your best effort. Just the fact that there is a low supply of information products for this niche leaves you in a very good position.

You can wipe the mat with the small number of competitors in your niche because it's very likely they don't have the marketing prowess you possess.

You can use some or all of the internet marketing strategies such as writing a catchy headline, doing joint ventures, creating upsells, backend selling, using guarantees and more.

Niche markets have always been popular and now they're catching on. You're leaving money on the table if you don't target these hungry folks who are willing to shell out lots of cash to solve their problems.

Now your only question is how to find what niches are profitable and second, how do you create a product for that niche?

You should use two tools to start out. Overture's keyword inventory too at http://inventory.overture.com and Google. Type in a single term in the inventory tool. You will get back a list of all the terms that are related to your term and the number of searches conducted in overture in the last month for that term.

This is the general method for determining the demand for a niche. Usually you will want to find a term that gets at least 30,000 searches a month. You will also need to find a term that targets people who will spend money.

For example, I typed in Jokes in the inventory tool and "michael jackson jokes" came up with about 30,000 searches. Now this is a niche of people who like Michael Jackson Jokes but that doesn't mean they'll spend money for your info product.

To find out the type of terms in which you can make a profit from you should go to Google and type in your niche terms. On the right hand side of the search results, you'll see a bunch of ads called Adword ads.

The more Adwords ads you see for a niche term, the better because it shows that people are willing to spend money on that niche. Advertisers pay for those ads so if it wasn't a profitable niche, they wouldn't pay for advertising.

Creating a product for the niche is much easier than finding the niche itself. You actually don't need a product to make money. If you can find affiliate programs within the niche, then you can just promote the affiliate programs.

To create a product, you don't need to know anything about the niche. Just hire some ghost writers to do the work of writing for you. Before you do that though, it's best to learn what type of information people in that niche would pay for.

You can search through forums and read through the questions and concerns or you can interview a bunch of people in the niche. Just interviewing them will help you learn a whole lot about the people in the niche and what they're interested in.

If you interview a few experts in the niche, you might not even need to hire a ghost writer because you can compile the interview into an audio product and sell it as is.

Once you have the product created, just set up a webpage, autoresponder course, and viral ebook. Go post in the niche forums, advertise in the niche ezines, write niche articles and you'll experience how much easier it is to sell to a niche market than to the internet marketing crowd.

Website Help

More tips researched and provided Seo Creation Lab.com just some SEO HELP

The elements of good website design

What constitutes a good website design? Does it showcase your design prowess? Does it prove what a brilliant graphic designer you are? Does your web design fetch you designing awards? Or does your website design exist to establish a platform for you and your visitors to interact with each other unhindered by usability glitches? I think the last point is the most important factor that establishes the basic difference between a successful and an unsuccessful website. Although the perception of good website design changes from person to person, there are some established conventions that you can follow and these conventions can make sure that your website reaches out to all possible people. When you are designing your website, especially these days, you have to be constantly conscious of the fact that there are numerous browsers and numerous devices that people may use to access your website. No longer do people browse the Internet just through their PCs and laptops; there are many handheld devices that can directly connect to the Internet and enable people to browse your website; people can even browse your website using their mobile phones. And gone are the days when people used just the Internet Explorer as their primary Internet browser. Your website design also depends on what you are planning to showcase through your website: will it be just text or images or videos or a mixture of all these? You have to design your website accordingly. If it is merely text that you plan to publish then try to make it as less graphical as possible as people coming to your website will be interested in your text and not your images and videos. Similarly a website showcasing your Flash animation expertise will expect lots of Flash work so you needn't worry about making your website textually accessible. So when you are designing your website you have to take all these parameters into consideration. But does it mean that you're always accommodating browsers and devises and do not focus on your own business, whatever that is? No, I'm not suggesting that. Just take care of the following website design guidelines and you will make sure that 95% people (well, there will always be those odd 5% who can never browse the web easily no matter what they try) surfing the Internet can access your website: 1) Create a lighter design. If possible don't use too many graphics and JavaScripts that affect a major function of your website. For instance if there is some crucial information on your website and people need to access that information before doing business with you then don't make that information accessible only through a JavaScript on an image file or a Flash animation. All your important text should be available only in text and even if you have to resort to using images and other stuff than make sure the textual alternative is always available. 2) Don't use colors that cause strain to the eyes. If you want people to come to your website again and again and consume your content or do business with you then you must make their stay over your website as pleasant as possible. No matter how awesome your design looks if the color combinations are strain-full, after a while they will tire of your website and stop coming. Always take care that your background behind the text is far lighter than the text, and vice versa. 3) Create a well defined navigation. If you have multiple pages on your website then there should be a prominently defined navigation system that is easily accessible to everybody. As mentioned above don't let your navigation depend on images, JavaScripts, or Flash animation. If possible create just a text-based navigation bar. With CSS designing you can create great looking navigation bars. 4) Design your website using CSS because then you can make your content and your navigation bar appear in a linear fashion. Since all the layout-related placements take place through CSS definitions no matter how your text appears texturally, graphically it will appear as a pleasant layout. The CSS designing techniques also enable you to dabble with intricate layouts without making your website inaccessible. CSS designing will always help you arrange your main content before the navigation link despite making it visually appear beneath the navigation bar or to the right of it. Follow these basic web design principles and you will have a good website design to boast of. Remember that your website design is created for the sake of your visitors and not to cater to your designing whims and fancies.

Search Friendly Seo Help

- Keep Your Website Search Friendly
Search Friendly By Sharon Housley
So you have a fantastic website but no one ever visits. You may ask? Why? Your website should be designed with search engines in mind. Too many web designers are graphic artists that excel at image manipulation, but lack a basic understanding of search engine optimization. Web design and search engine optimization (SEO) should not be mutually exclusive. Webmasters should have a clear understanding of both design techniques and how the search engines work.
Incredible graphics on a website without any traffic, will do little to fill the coffers. Follow these basic guidelines to ensure that your website will be visited and attractive.
1. Navigation Both humans and crawlers (search engines) need to be able to navigate your website. Avoid using technology that prohibits the search engine's ability to spider web pages. The majority of search engines have the ability to follow the links on a website if you use standard HTML. Observe normal convention and make the links obvious and available to all website visitors.
2. Easy to Read Fonts should be legible and webmasters should utilize white space judiciously. Text on the web page should be easy to read.
3. Speed Avoid using overly large graphics that are slow to load. Remember you only have mere seconds to capture the visitors attention, do not waste precious seconds with web pages that are slow to load. Search engines too will become impatient and give up on your website if it takes too long to view the content. As a result you should avoid using free hosting services that might be unreliable or slow to respond if you receive any web traffic surges.
4. Consistency Your website should maintain a consistent look and feel. In other words, all the pages on the website should have a similar look, color scheme and navigation.
5. Above the Fold The most important information on the your web page should appear above the "fold". This means that the website visitor should be able to view the most important content without having to use the scroll bar.
6. Contact Information Include corporate contact information on the website. This lends your company credibility, anyone can pretend to be anyone or anything. Including contact information on a website shows that you are a serious and legitimate business entity.
7. Avoid Javascript /AjaxJavascript and Ajax are cool, but they are not search friendly. It is best to stick with good old HTML. Search engines at this point are unable to spider the website contents that are displayed using Javascript. This is also true of websites that are dynamically updated with Ajax. Chances are the body of your website will help your website rank well; do not waste the search engine opportunity by using Javascript or Ajax.
8. Meta Data Matters Each and every web page on the website should contain a unique title and description. Many search engines extract meta data from the website header and use it to classify and categorize the web pages listing. The web page title and description should relate to the webpage contents.
9. Keywords Naturally Use website keywords and keyword phrases in the web copy in a natural way. Search engines are starting to discern unnatural text, machine generated content and content that is cobbled together by a bot. Write your website's content for humans not search engines.
10. Web Page Focus Each web page on a website should focus on one or two keywords or keyword phrases, no more no less. The keywords should be incorporated into the meta tags, and web copy.
An optimized website can bring search traffic and visitors who have a natural interest in your product or service. Optimization should be part of the design process. Before hiring a web designer make sure they understand both your design needs and search engine optimization.

SEO for Images on Web Sites

By: Patrick Heathcock - [web]
Posted 07/24/07

Excellent images are essential for web sites and can lift an ordinary web site to a professional level. The average surfer responds better to websites that use good quality images, tending to linger longer and browse more pages than when faced with dense, text-heavy pages. There are many reasonable priced picture libraries online where one can source everything from flower pictures to computer equipment images.

Here are a few rules that need to be followed to ensure that the images become an asset to your site rather than an unwieldy burden and that your careful SEO use of keywords in the text is enhanced by the images:

1. Make sure all your images are correctly optimized: i.e. a relatively large image of 600x475 pixels should be between 20KB and 50KB in size(maximum). If you use a lot of thumbnail images on one page (125x125 pixel) then they should be between 5KB and 10KB in size.

By sticking to these simple size guides you will ensure that your page loads quickly. Do check every single image that you put up. I have seen images on websites that are 2MB in size, leaving the web site owner scratching his head and wondering why the page takes so long to load. Casual surfers will have long since departed to faster loading sites.

2. Naming your images appropriately will substantially help by making it easier for Google to find the images on your web site (Google has recently changed its algorithm to take into account images and other media more than ever before) improving your overall search engine optimization.

Try to name each image using keywords that link to the subject of the page that the image is on. If the subject of your page is red flowers, then find an image of a red flower and name it red-flower.jpg. Hyphenate the image names or use underscore between the words. The search engine spiders will see this image name as separate words if you do this.

Don't be tempted to abbreviate your image names, thus rendering them unrecognizable for SEO purposes e.g. rdflwr.jpg. You may end up with rather long image names by using the full keyword names but you will maximise the SEO benefits of your chosen key phrases for each page.

Lastly vary the image names that you use, when you have multiple images on one page, even by one letter to make it a plural e.g. red-flowers.jpg or flowers-red.jpg so that the search engines don't penalise you for keyword loading.

3. Make sure you add alt tags to every image, which are also taken into account by the search engine spiders, once again using appropriately varied keyword phrases that link to the subject of the page.

4. Search on the Net for royalty free stock picture libraries. There are many of them, some specialising in one subject others covering a huge range of subjects. They are normally free to register with and generally use one of two payment systems: a credit system whereby you purchase x number of credits and each image costs a number of credits according to size; or a monthly subscription which allows you to download a certain number of images each month. Most libraries provide web ready images at 72 dpi or print ready images at 300 dpi. Web ready images are generally from 450-800 pixels wide or high, but this is perfectly adequate for use on a website. With prices often ranging from $1 per web ready image to $50 for a A4 sized print ready image this is a very affordable way of enhancing your web site and attracting both spiders and surfers.

Basic SEO Article - Focusing on Quick Optimization techniques for the newbie

By: Brad Callen - [site]
Posted 08/22/05

Basic On-Page SEO

On-page optimization is often ignored by the top sites on Google - after all, who cares about a few percentage points when you can literally buy your way to the top of the search engine result pages (SERPs) with a bucket-load of inbound links?

Today I'll discuss a bit about why, contrary to common practice, why on-page SEO is so important and then tell you how you can quickly optimize your web pages even if you have very little time!

On-Page SEO - The Benefits

A lot of webmasters (including some self-proclaimed SEO experts) claim that on-page optimization is obsolete - that the only thing that matters is off-page optimization (i.e. link building).

So is that true?

Actually, like most SEO hype, there's some truth involved. Inbound links have become the overwhelming determining factor in a website's search engine rankings, but theres more to the story then that.

Why bother with On-Page SEO?

Here are just three reasons off the top of my head:

- With everyone chasing after links, the playing field is leveled somewhat. This means that well-optimized pages will have a better chance of ranking higher if they might not beat the top websites on link count (but come close nevertheless).

- Because of keyword spamming, search engines paid more attention to links. Now, because of link-spamming, search engines are moving back towards paying more attention to other ranking factors, including on-page optimization.

- Over 90% of your competition probably doesn't know how to optimize their web pages, or are doing it wrong, or are probably committing some sort of search engine spamming, so that you can immediately place yourself within the top 10% of your niche by just spending a few minutes on each page and getting things done right (or hiring someone to do it for you if you have a huge site).

I'll be honest. No one knows exactly how important on-page optimization is. Of course, you should still be paying a great deal of attention to link-building, but the key is this - link-building is a long-term process, whereas on-page optimization a short, one-time thing. With its obvious ranking benefits, why wouldn't you be optimizing your web pages?

On-Page SEO - A Quick Tour

Before I go over the techniques, I want you to remember these things:

Search engine optimization is a lot about doing things in moderation - you can't do too little of it otherwise your pages won't rank at all, and if you go too far (and start spamming the search engines), you'll get your website banned and essentially kiss your online business goodbye.

Secondly, before you are optimizing a particular page, make sure you write down a short list of core keywords for that page. This is extremely important - search engines rank pages, not websites, so all your efforts should be directed towards making sure individual pages rank best for their own primary keyword.

Title Tag

The Title tag is where most webmasters make serious mistakes (in case you didn't know, the Title tag contains the text that you see on the top of your browser window). Now the best way to write a Title tag is to make sure that you get your best keywords for that page in there. Don't bother with words that are not needed, such as ''and'' or ''the'' - stick with your core keywords.

Using the example of a website owned by a professional resume writer looking to start their online business, for the home page you would probably use the following Title tag:

''Professional Resume Writer Guaranteed Resume Writing''

Not only do you have your core keywords in there, you have also managed to combine them in one line without using the needless words like ''and'' and ''the''.

Of course, you can always go too far and stuff the Title tag with as many keywords as possible. If you are thinking about doing that, DON'T! That sort of optimization will land you into trouble with the search engine algorithms, which automatically flag any website that uses spammy optimization techniques - and once you are ''red-flagged'' like this, you'll be going down, not up in the rankings.

The next step is to take care of all your header tags.

Header Tags

Also known as H1 and H2 (and so on) tags, the header tags in your page give the search engine spiders an idea of how your page is structured. Therefore, if you can put in important keywords that are relevant to your page's content in the header tags, the search engine will then ''know'' that this particular page contains information on topics relating to those keywords - thus helping your page rank better for those keywords.

It's actually simpler than it sounds. Sticking with the ''Resume Writer'' website, let's suppose you have a page that's titled ''How to write a Resume'' (bear with me here). Now, you might have two sections on that page - an article on resume writing and general resume writing tips. Now instead of lumping it all together, here's what you could do:

- H1 tag for the page heading - including a variation of the Title tag
- H2 tags for both sections - ''Resume Writing'' and ''Resume Writing Tips'' in this case.

Textual Tags

When a search engine spider is scanning a page, it's looking for several factors to determine what is important and what's not. In particular, it looks for text tags - bold, underline or italics, to help it rank the page. Why?

Quite simply, the search engine spider is programmed to ''think'' that any text that is put in bold, italics or underlined is considered important information by the user, and therefore it ''might'' be important. This is where bullet points come in handy as well.

I said ''might'' be important because search engine spiders have very sophisticated algorithms that look at hundreds of other factors, including the relevance of the surrounding text.

So if you concentrate on putting bold or italics tags around your core keywords (while maintaining a natural flow of content), you will be directly improving the chances of a search engine spider ranking that page higher for those keywords.

Similarly, if you have an important list of points that you want to emphasize (or perhaps summarize), you could put them in an ordered (numbered) list or just a plain bulleted list on your page - this will set that portion of text apart and alert the search engine spider that this text is more important.

The Image Tag

This is an interesting tag because it's not that widely-used, and when some webmasters do use it they tend to stuff the tag with keywords in a futile attempt to influence search engines.

The Image tag is supposed to help the search engines ''read'' into what the image that you are displaying is about - thus the need to plug in your relevant keywords into the tag. Note that if your image is, let's say, a picture of a hiking resort and your website is an adventure tours business, then you might plug in keywords that relate to hiking resorts - remember to focus on the core keywords for that page and not just the website on the whole.

Three things you should NEVER do

By David Leonhardt
Three things you should NEVER do(even if some slick-talking "expert"tells you it will cost you only $499and will guarantee you gaggles of customers)
A webmistress asked me recently how much I would charge to optimize her site for the search engines. I took a glance at her site, and the first thing I found was a hidden link to an association she was part of.
I asked her why the link was there. She told me it was "for the search engines." It never ceases to amaze me how much really bad - I mean absolutely horrible - advice is floating around the Internet.
She never did hire me, but she did walk away with one free piece of advice that I now share with you: "Remove that link ASAP." Hidden links and hidden text are big trouble and something you should never do.
A hidden link is simply a link the search engine robots would follow, but is not visible to the naked eye. It could be a one pixel by one pixel graphic the same color as the background. Hidden text could be keyword written in the same color as the background.
If a search engine detects text in the same color as the background, it might penalize or even ban your site. In fact, one search engine expert has even suggested that if your background is, say, white, and you have a black table with white text on your page, that search engines would read that as hidden text (white background, white text) even though the text is clearly visible in the black table. Hmm. I will have to revisit my own site's colors.
Why are hidden links and hidden text bad? Because they try to cheat the rules. Cheating is bad, and search engines do not like playing with cheaters.
Duplicate pages are also a no-no. Search engines like original content made for human visitors. Five pages with the same article are seen as spamming, even if you did change "bicycle repair" to "fix your bike" in the second version and to "bike repair" in the third.
I was asked to exchange links with four websites this one person owned. The sites are very wholesome and I believe the webmaster is too. But the link pages on each website are identical: same introductory text and same links in the same order with identical wording each. All it would take is one complain to get all four sites banned, or at very least, severely demoted at Google and other search engines.
Needless to say, I turned down the offer, so that my site would not be associated with a "bad neighborhood".
Why are duplicate pages bad? Because they try to cheat the rules. Cheating is bad, and search engines do not like playing with cheaters.
Doorway pages are also bad. A doorway page is a page carefully designed to do well on search engine results, but is never meant to be used by humans. Often there is then a link to a website or there is some form of redirect.
Why not just optimize your site for the keywords you want, rather than try to trick the search engines? It probably will cost you less to hire a good search engine optimizer, and your website will not get banned.
I was approached by someone offering a combination of doorway pages and link farming (another no-no!). He did not call them by those names, even insisting they were not doorway pages. He wanted a few hundred dollars a month. There's nothing like your friendly neighborhood mortician coming to call when business is slow and bearing his own special brew for you to sample.
Why are doorway pages bad? Because they try to cheat the rules. Cheating is bad, and search engines do not like playing with cheaters.
By the way, "doorway pages" should not be confused with "entry pages". I get lots of my traffic entering through one or another of my articles. But these are real articles with real content, designed for human eyes and optimized for the search engines. This is a good tactic, because it adds content (which is what search engines are looking for).
Hidden links and text, duplicate pages and doorway pages are just a few of the "clever" tactics that can land you in the "Search Engine Slammer". If you spend much time on the Internet, you'll be approached about many others sooner or later.
Here is a simple question to ask yourself: "Would this be helping the search engines deliver the best results, or would it be trying to cheat their rules?" If it feels a little funny, don't try it. Or ask someone who knows.
Search engines are your friends. Be nice to them, and they'll be nice to you. You might just land yourself a berth atop Mount Google.
